A Golden Year for Waimea Estates
It has been a golden year for Nelson wine company Waimea Estates, with two wins in the International Aromatic Wine Competition – the latest in a long list of successes.
General Manager, Ben Bolitho says receiving gold medals for Waimea Gewurztraminer 2011 and Spinyback Riesling 2009 now takes the family-owned company’s tally of Gold Medals well past the 100 milestone.
Continuing the good news, Winestate Magazine has just announced the results of their Winestate Annual Edition where they review every top scoring wine tasted during 2012:
Waimea has taken SIX places in their “Top 40 Best Buys of 2012” plus a number of other placings:
-Waimea Classic Riesling 2009: Finalist Wine of the Year Award, Top 40 Best Value, Best Wines of NZ 2012, Best of Style 2012
-Waimea Gewurztraminer 2011: Best Wines of NZ 2012
-Takutai Riesling 2009: Best of Style 2012, Top 40 Best Value
-Waimea Sauvignon Blanc 2011: Top 40 Best Value

Waimea Estates’ focus on becoming a premium producer was reflected in the continued success, said Mr Bolitho.

Our awards tally now stands at 104 Gold Medals and 20 Trophies – and with these Winestate Awards and five Silver Medals in the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition in London recently, we feel we can stand proudly amongst the New Zealand wine industry as a high quality winemaker.”

Waimea Estates的主人Trevor 與Robyn Bolitho從1993年起開始在Nelson的Waimea平原種植葡萄，它首款上市的葡萄酒即贏得了1997年度的Sauvignon Blanc獎項，目前規模已超過100公頃的種植面積，旗下並擁有6個葡萄園。此區的土壤是貧脊的沖積土，再加上豐富的日照時數與較長的成熟期，以及適當的海風調節與山丘的屏障，為生長高品質釀酒葡萄提供了優渥的先天條件。
Waimea Estates所生產的主要葡萄品種有：Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir,以及少量的Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer 以及Cabernet Sauvignon與Merlot的混合品種。此外，我們有兩款酒已擁有許多忠誠的支持者，即Rieslings餐後甜酒與草莓奶油粉紅酒。當收成狀況較佳時，我們也會特別挑選葡萄園，修剪疏果後製成「Bolitho Reserve」酒款。
Michael Brown是Waimea的釀酒師，之前在歐洲與南美洲擁有豐富的釀酒經驗，紅酒。當收成狀況較佳時，我們也會特別挑選葡萄園，修剪疏果後製成「Bolitho Reserve」酒款。在創新的技術上，他使用溫和的處理與發酵技術來製作果香醇厚的葡萄酒。當他想製作不同的酒款時，常會採用一些細微的處裡方式，來增加酒款的複雜性，卻不降低其水果風味。Mike本身對其所製作酒款的簡單描述是『酒體醇厚、質地細緻、風味平衡』，其目標是所釀造的酒款均細緻且優雅。
Waimea Estates每年生產約30,000瓶酒，目前紐西蘭本地的消費量大約佔三分之二，其餘則銷往澳洲、日本、中國、美國、加拿大、比利時、瑞典、愛爾蘭與英國。
